A one-person submersible descending through a bioluminescent kelp forest. There is no sky on this dial and no horizon: the whole face is water, and the only warm light anywhere on it is Suzu's own lamp.
A dial that descends through the day
Six depths, from sunlit teal just under the surface at five in the morning to a near-black abyss by ten at night, and back up again overnight. The deeper it goes the more the water glows, because below the sunlit zone the wildlife is the only light there is.
It moves
A jellyfish pulses through a full eight-frame swimming cycle, the kelp sways on a four-frame loop, bubbles rise and fade, and marine snow drifts down past the lamp. Four separate layers of the scene shift at different rates as you turn your wrist, so the water has real depth to it.
A sounding line for the hour
Ten marks across the top pay out one by one as the hour goes by, so you can see how far through it you are without reading the minutes.
Seven moments in Suzu's dive
Descending at dawn, surveying the kelp, collecting samples, watching something in the dark, sweeping her lamp through the deep, and drifting home at the end of a long night. Put the watch on charge and she turns and rises toward the light.
Everything else
- a ballast cell battery gauge, ten chips that turn red when low and run a highlight up the column while charging
- contacts appear on sonar when you have unread notifications, and there are more of them the more are waiting (only the count is read, never the content)
- a tide dial that turns through the month
- numerals in Ice, Kelp or Lamp
- date, sea life, tide dial, sounding line, ballast cell and contacts each on or off
- a sparse always-on mode that keeps a single point of lamplight
